Russia detains more than 1,600 migrants detained for working illegally

MOSCOW, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- More than, 1,600 illegal immigrants have been detained in Russia after police raids in eight regions of the country, police said.

In the largest of the weekend sweeps, 800 people were detained in the Tyumen region of western Siberia on charges of working in Russia illegally, RIA Novosti reported Monday.

Some 570 Chinese were found to working illegally in greenhouses in the southern Krasnodar region, police said. The immigrants were fined a total of $28,000 and deported.

Police said they checked 413 foreigners working at markets in the Perm region, but did not report how many were found in violation of migration rules.

Another 200 migrants were held in the Moscow region Friday.

About 1,000 people, mostly Vietnamese, have been arrested in Moscow since late July for allegedly working in Russia illegally.
