Alleged illegal immigrants rounded up in Moscow

MOSCOW, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Hundreds of foreigners suspected of working illegally in Russia have been rounded up and detained at a tent camp in Moscow, officials said Saturday.

The latest sweep added 132 inmates to the camp, RIA Novosti reported. Officials say most of the 1,400 people caught this week are Vietnamese nationals.

The camp was designed to hold 900 people. Police said they expect the population to keep growing.

Vladimir Lukin, Russia's human rights ombudsman, criticized the camp Saturday after visiting it, ITAR-Tass reported.

"These conditions do not comply with the government's provisions," he said. "Before being extradited, those people should enjoy human rights."
