DAMASCUS, Syria, June 2 (UPI) -- At least eight Syrian regime soldiers were killed when a car bomb was detonated near a police station in Damascus Sunday, officials said.
The blast happened during intense clashes between rebels and President Bashar Assad's troops in Jobar, a suburb of Damascus, CNN reported.
An unspecified number of civilians were injured in the blast, CNN said.
Fighting had also intensified in the Syrian border city of Qusayr, where as many as 1,500 people were believed to be wounded and in need of medical care.
United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon has urged both sides of the now 2-year-old civil war to allow civilians to leave the town. Ban also warned that both sides would be held accountable for civilian deaths.
"The eyes of the world are upon them, and they will be held accountable for any acts of atrocity carried out against the civilian population," Ban said.
An estimated 80,000 people have been killed since the start of the Syrian civil war, CNN reported.
