CAIRO, May 15 (UPI) -- Hamas and Fatah have agreed to form a unity government in the Gaza Strip within three months, a senior Hamas official said.
Hamas Deputy Chairman Moussa Abu Marzouk told the Palestinian Ma'an News Agency that the agreement reached in Cairo calls for reconciliation to be implemented by July.
Marzouk called the talks in Cairo "positive."
Last year Hamas and Fatah reached an accord to form a unity government that would pave the way for presidential and parliamentary elections, The Jerusalem Post reported.
Amal Hamad, a member of the Fatah Central Committee from Gaza, has accused Hamas of not being serious about reconciliation.
"Hamas is interested in maintaining its Islamic emirate in the Gaza Strip, Hamad said.
Hamad also accused Hamas of cracking down on Fatah supporters in Gaza, noting that more than 30 activists were summoned for interrogation in a 24-hour period this week.
