England withdrawing support staff from embassy in Libya

TRIPOLI, Libya, May 10 (UPI) -- Britain announced Friday it is withdrawing some of its staff from its embassy in Libya in response to violence in Tripoli in recent weeks.

The Foreign Office said it was "temporarily withdrawing a small number of staff," the BBC reported.

The embassy will remain "open as usual," the ministry said. Those being sent home work in support positions at government ministries "which have been affected by recent developments."

The ministry advised against all but essential travel to the capital and other parts of Libya.

A car bomb exploded outside the French embassy in Tripoli in April and heavily armed militias have besieged government buildings in the past month.
