April 25, 2013 at 7:45 AM

ALMONTE, Spain, April 25 (UPI) -- A British man drowned in Spain after attempting to retrieve a golf ball from a lake on a course in Almonte, police said.

The man, whose name is not being released, was playing the Dunas de Donana course when he hit a ball into the lake next to the fifth hole.

The 70-year-old man slipped and fell into the lake while trying to fish the ball out, thinkSPAIN reported this week.

He did not know how to swim and he was unable to get back onto dry land.

Emergency services were called but they were unable to revive him, thinkSPAIN said.
