Former white leader's Zimbabwe farm seized

HARARE, Zimbabwe, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Former Zimbabwe white minority leader Ian Smith's farm was seized by the government and has been handed over to a local technical college, officials said.

Smith's farm was seized under Zimbabwe's land-reform program, which takes white-owned land and redistributes it among black farmers, the BBC reported.

Smith lived at the farm, called Gwenoro, during most of his adult life, and after he died in 2007, his ashes were scattered there.

The seizure came as President Robert Mugabe addressed supporters ahead of elections in 2013. Mugabe, 88, is running for another term.
