Hamas seeks to strengthen ties with Egypt

GAZA, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Hamas wants to enhance security cooperation with Egypt and protect shared borders, the prime minister of the militant Palestinian organization said.

"Yes, we want security coordination with our brothers and strategic depth [in Egypt] and not with the Zionist enemy," The Jerusalem Post quoted Ismail Haniyeh as telling thousands of worshipers during an Eid al-Fitr prayer service Sunday in Gaza.

Gaza will become a source of stability to Egypt, Haniyeh said.

Haniyeh praised Palestinian prisoners incarcerated in Israel and declared "resistance" will free them, the Post said.

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi telephoned Haniyeh Sunday and told him Egypt and the Palestinians are "on the same side," the Hamas affiliated al-Resalah Web site said.
