Pakistani acid attack victim buried

KARACHI, Pakistan, March 25 (UPI) -- A Pakistani woman who committed suicide over the prevalence of acid attacks on women -- and was herself disfigured by acid -- was buried Sunday, officials said.

Fakhra Younus jumped from the sixth floor of her apartment building in Italy March 17, leaving a note saying she killed herself over the silence of law on the atrocities and insensitivity of Pakistani rulers, News Network International, Karachi, reported.

Younus' face had been badly disfigured in 2000 when her husband Bilal Khar threw acid on her in Pakistan. The couple's relationship was in conflict when Younus learned of Khar's previous three marriages, and she had moved back into her parents' home, the news Web site said.

Younus had been living in Italy to receive treatment for her disfigurement -- 39 surgical attempts were made to reshape her face.

Members of Pakistan's liberal party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement were on hand at the Karachi airport Sunday when Younus' body arrived, Geo TV, Pakistan, reported. The group has appealed to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to arrest Khar, a former member of Parliament and son of former Punjab Chief Minister Ghulam Mustafa Khar.
