BUKAVU, Democratic Republic of Congo, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A private plane crashed Sunday in the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing former Katanga province governor Katumba Mwanke and two others, officials said.

The private jet belonging to Mwanke, a senior adviser to President Joseph Kabila and a former member of Parliament, crashed as it arrived at the Bukavu airport in South Kivu province, Radio Okapi in Kinshasa reported.

Witnesses said the plane, arriving from Kinshasa, missed the runway upon landing and ended up in the Kulanga River. The number of passengers on board was unknown. The pilot and co-pilot were both killed in the crash.

Finance Minister Matata Ponyo, Governor of South Kivu province Marcelin Cishambo and itinerant Ambassador Antoine Ghonda were injured in the crash, Radio Okapi said.
