JUAREZ, Mexico, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Authorities are investigating a series of attacks in Juarez that left 14 people dead, including four people who were killed aboard an ambulance.

The ambulance was transporting two patients to dialysis Wednesday when it was ambushed by gunmen, CNN reported.

The gunmen reportedly killed the two patients, as well as the driver and another passenger in the vehicle, police said.

Police said the ambulance had traveled to Juarez from the city of Nuevo Casas Grandes, about 170 miles away.

Juarez, which shares a border with El Paso, Texas, is one of Mexico's most violent cities, the report said.

The crime rate in Juarez has dropped since 2010, CNN reported, with the daily homicide rate falling from about eight a day in 2010 to six in 2011.

About 43,000 people have died throughout Mexico since President Felipe Calderon declared a crackdown on drug cartels in 2006.
