URUMQI, China, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- A 6-magnitude earthquake that struck northwestern China Tuesday damaged some houses, local officials said.

The quake, which occurred at 8:21 a.m. in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, prompted officials to declare a class three emergency but no casualties had been reported, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

Schools in the region were temporarily closed and a landslide blocked a section of highway, blocking traffic.

Two teams were dispatched to perform rescue and recovery work, an official said.

An earthquake measuring 5.4-magnitude jolted the border area of Sichuan and Gansu provinces in western China at 5:58 a.m. Tuesday, the China Earthquake Networks Center said. No casualties were reported as a result of that temblor either.
