Bombs disrupt train service in Thailand

BANGKOK, July 27 (UPI) -- Two bombs damaged train tracks in southern Thailand, disrupting service Wednesday, and nearby attacks killed two police officers, authorities said.

The blasts, which occurred about 5 a.m. at different spots along train tracks, halted 14 trains passing through Narathiwat's Rangae district for much of Wednesday, the Bangkok Post reported. No injuries were reported.

A bomb-disposal team and soldiers were sent to investigate.

The tracks were repaired and train service was to resume Wednesday afternoon, said Yuthana Thapcharoen, State Railway of Thailand governor.

He said railway staff members had been told to be more vigilant and work more closely with security officials to ensure safety.

Meanwhile, in Pattani province, two police officers from Nong Chik district police station were fatally shot in an attack on the Pattani-Hat Yai highway Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The officers, Sgt-Maj Narin Hatre, 39, and Pol Sgt-Maj Noppadol Man-ah, 39, were riding a motorcycle about 1 p.m. when gunmen in a pickup truck shot them with M-16 rifles, said Col. Chonvee Chavarerk, the Nong Chik police chief.

Also in Pattani, two soldiers from the Pattani Task Force 21 suffered wounds when a bomb exploded near a mosque about 9 a.m.
