Police violently break up Zimbabwe rally

HARARE, Zimbabwe, April 9 (UPI) -- Robert Mugabe's police Saturday attacked thousands of protesters in Harare, Zimbabwe, witnesses said.

Organizers from Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change said the rally was supposed to be peaceful but was broken up with tear gas and batons, CNN reported.

Four people were arrested, human-rights lawyer Alec Muchadehama said.

"We are still trying to locate those arrested," he said. "What has happened today shows that Zimbabweans still have a long way before they can attain their freedoms. They cannot be guaranteed freedom of assembly. A peaceful prayer for a peaceful nation is dispersed violently. That can only happen where there is no rule of law."

Police did not confirm the arrests.

The MDC, which is in a shaky "unity" government with Mugabe, accused the president's ZANU-PF Party of sending "thugs" to detain its youth leader.

After a regional meeting in Zambia last week South African President Jacob Zuma sent a team to Zimbabwe to find a way to save the coalition government.
