Arrests in rape victim's Shariah death

SHARIATPUR, Bangladesh, March 30 (UPI) -- Police in Bangladesh said they have arrested several people in the death of a 14-year-old rape victim a week after she received 101 lashes.

Hena Akhter was sentenced to the whipping under Shariah law after being raped by an older relative when she left her house in rural Shariatpur a year ago, CNN reported Wednesday.

Shariah law is illegal in Bangladesh but it is still practiced.

Responding to public outcry over her death, a judge ordered Hena's body exhumed and a second autopsy revealed she died of internal bleeding from the imam-ordered whipping.

This week a court ruled doctors responsible for the first autopsy can be prosecuted for issuing a "false post-mortem report to hide the real cause of Hena's death."

Police are continuing to investigate and have arrested several people including the relative who raped Hena.
