Zimbabwe's Daily News to resume publishing

ZIMBABWE, South Africa, March 18 (UPI) -- Zimbabwe's Daily News will resume publication eight years after being shut down for criticizing President Robert Mugabe, newspaper officials said.

The Daily News was once Zimbabwe's best-selling newspaper and is one of just two privately owned dailies in the country, the BBC reported Friday.

Zimbabwe has no privately owned television or radio stations.

Before it was banned in 2003, The Daily News press was blown up and its reporters were arrested on numerous occasions for writing reports critical of Mugabe, the report said.

The newspaper will resume full operation on March 25.

In an editorial, The Daily News said it would "take a critical stand against bad governance."

The country's media is dominated by state-owned outlets, which often praise Mugabe and criticize Morgan Tsvangirai, with whom he shares power, the report said.

Both Mugabe and Tsvangirai say the power-sharing arrangement is no longer working.

Tsvangirai said state security agents backed by Mugabe are harassing members of his Movement for Democratic Change party.
