Some missing artifacts found in Cairo

CAIRO, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Some of the ancient artifacts stolen from the Egyptian Museum during Cairo's recent turmoil have been found, Egypt's antiquities chief said Monday.

A heart scarab turned up outside the museum and one of 11 missing statuettes and part of a mummy were found on a floor, archaeologist Zahi Hawass said. Ten other statues are still missing.

Thieves broke into the museum Jan. 28 during demonstrations in adjoining Tahrir Square.

Other items still unaccounted for include a gilded wood statue of King Tutankhamen being carried by a goddess and part of another Tutankhamen statue, a limestone statue of Akhenaten, a statue of Nefertiti making offerings, a sandstone head of a princess and a stone statuette of a scribe, CNN reported.

Some of the missing pieces may be buried on the museum grounds, Hawass said.

At least 393 pieces missing from a storage area in the Sinai also have been recovered, he said. It was unknown how many objects were still missing from the "many boxes" of antiquities Hawass said had been stolen.
