Iran hangs two protesters as terrorists

TEHRAN, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Iran hanged two protesters involved in the country's massive 2009 demonstrations as "terrorists" Monday, state media reported.

The government's Press TV called Jafar Kazemi and Mohammad Ali Haj Aqaei "members of the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization terrorist group who had carried out activities against the Islamic Republic in liaison with agents in Britain."

The men were hanged "for distributing placards and photos of the terrorist group, making videos and images during the post-election unrest in Iran in 2009 and chanting slogans in favor of the MKO," the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency said.

IRNA said Haj Aqaei had admitted staying at Camp Ashraf, the MKO's base in Iraq, and that Kazemi had links with MKO leaders inside Iran and raised funds for the group.

Kazemi also confessed that he took videos and photos from the post-election unrest to Camp Ashraf, IRNA said.

In August 2010, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged Iran not to execute the men, who she said were "exercising their right to free expression," CNN reported.
