'Hotel Rwanda' hero accused of subversion

KIGALI, Rwanda, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Rwandan authorities have accused Paul Rusesabagina, the inspiration for the hero in the movie "Hotel Rwanda," of financing subversion in the country.

Rusesabagina, now living in exile, denied the accusations -- he has not been charged -- in an interview with the BBC.

"It is the latest step in a campaign against me by the Rwandan government that has included public insults from the president himself, lies and physical harassment," he said.

The British network reported Wednesday Rwanda's top prosecutor, Martin Ngoga, has alleged Rusesabagina sent money to two former commanders of a rebel group, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, or FDLR. Ngoga says Rusesabagina has acted in concert with opposition leader Victoire Ingabire, who was arrested last week.

Rusesabagina has spoken out against the government of President Paul Kagame.

"I'm not a man of violence ... but anyone who opposes Kagame is treated with this kind of harassment," he said.

The movie "Hotel Rwanda" portrayed Rusesabagina's efforts to hundreds of Tutsis at his hotel during the genocide that swept the country in 1994.
