Two cops charged with assault

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Canadian authorities have filed assault charges against two police officers for using a stun gun on a 73-year-old man arrested under the mental health act.

The incident occurred in April when police in Vancouver responded to a call of a man with a knife at a home, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Tuesday.

The man was taken to a local hospital where a mountie stunned him once with a Taser, causing facial injuries, police said.

The mountie, identified as Mitchell Speares of Surrey, British Columbia, and Ken Jensen, a Metro transit police officer, are both charged in the incident.

Authorities said Speares and Jensen both have been suspended with pay.
