School doesn't want girl with Arabic name

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 27 (UPI) -- A Swedish 13-year-old has filed a discrimination complaint charging she was refused admission to a Stockholm school because she has an Arabic-sounding name.

The complaint charges a secretary at the school got the girl's mother to agree to have her daughter's admission application destroyed so there would be no record of the matter, the Swedish news agency TT reported Tuesday.

The school secretary called the girl's mother one day after her application arrived and said there were no places available in the 8th grade for next semester.

Unaware of the consequences, the mother agreed with the secretary's suggestion that her daughter's application be ripped up.

A week later, the girl's older sister decided to call the school to see whether the 8th grade really was full for the upcoming semester.

The sister gave a Swedish name and spoke with the principal who said there definitely were spots available.
