ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A California high school teacher has been sentenced to four years in prison for having sex with a 17-year-old student.
Scott Adrian Peterson, 50, of Anaheim, pleaded guilty in August to two felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, four felony counts of oral copulation of a minor, and two felony counts of sexual penetration by a foreign object of a minor, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Peterson was sentenced Friday to serve 16 months in jail and the remainder of his sentence under mandatory supervision, the Orange County district attorney's office said in a statement.
Prosecutors said Peterson met the 17-year-old victim, identified only as Jane Doe, while teaching Spanish at Orange High School. The teacher regularly spent time with the victim outside of class and began sending her explicit photos and texts in August 2010.
Peterson then began meeting with the victim at a motel and in an Orange County riverbed to engage in sex acts.
The girl's family became suspicious and notified police after they found sexual text messages on her phone.
