HEMET, Calif., March 2 (UPI) -- Hemet, Calif., school officials say they are "deeply concerned" a high school teacher has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a male student.
Sgt. Wally Clear of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said the Hemet Unified School District notified deputies around 9 p.m. PST Wednesday that a teacher may have been involved in a sexual relationship with a minor at the school, The (Riverside, Calif.) Press-Enterprise reported Friday.
Janel Ramirez, 31, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, continued sexual abuse of a minor and two counts of oral copulation. No charges have been filed.
Ramirez, a Hemet High School graduate who has taught ninth-grade English with the district since 2007, was released from Southwest Detention Center Thursday night on $100,000 bail.
It was unclear whether she has been placed on leave, the newspaper said.
"We're always deeply concerned when allegations like these surfaces," Hemet Deputy Superintendent LaFaye Platter said. "We've assured every family at Hemet Unified about their student's safety. We're a close-knit, conscientious community with an obligation to report any suspicious activity or child abuse."
