NACHIG, Mexico, June 27 (UPI) -- Police say the gunmen who opened fire on a political rally in southern Mexico, killing two and causing a riot, were still at large Sunday.
The gunfire broke out during a shouting match between supporters of two political parties Saturday afternoon in Nachig, a village in the restive state of Chiapas.
State officials said the shots were fired from a moving car at supporters of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which is known as PRI.
The shooting, which injured one other victim, sparked a full-blown riot that state officials said targeted the rival Democratic Revolutionary Party or PRD.
CNN reported state police poured into Nachig to restore order. Five homes and 20 vehicles had been set on fire and rioters had taken about 100 people hostage in a house, the U.S. news network said.
