Egyptian court wants Israel to pay $10M

JERUSALEM, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- An Egyptian court ordered Israel to pay $10 million in compensation to a family whose son was killed by Israeli tank fire near the Gaza border five years ago.

The incident occurred on November 17, 2004, when three Egyptian soldiers deployed near the Egyptian border town of Rafah came under fire from an Israeli tank stationed across the border, the al-Masry-al-Youm Web site said Monday.

The site said two soldiers were killed instantly and a third died later of his injuries.

The parents of one of the soldiers later filed a lawsuit against the Egyptian interior minister and the Israeli ambassador and demanded $10 million in compensation, the site said.

While the case was initially rejected, the parents appealed the decision claiming the shooting was deliberate and violated the Egypt-Israel Camp David peace agreement, the Web site said.

Their appeal was approved last week by the Cairo Court of Appeals.
