PITTSBURGH, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Investigators said Monday a 71-year-old woman fatally shot by police near Pittsburgh allegedly planned to ambush her former boyfriend.
North Versailles Township Police Chief James Comunale said Elsa Seman, 71, was seen armed with a pistol while lying in wait outside the home of Richard Ireland, 58, on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Comunale said an unidentified police officer was forced to shoot Seman after she allegedly pointed the firearm at the officer, who was responding to a call about a prowler outside the home.
Seman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The officer who shot Seman is on paid administrative leave and the incident is being investigated by Allegheny County homicide detectives.
Comunale told the Post-Gazette police officers previously had visited Ireland's home in response to reports of non-violent domestic disputes. None of the incidents, including a dispute between Ireland and Seman early Sunday, resulted in any criminal charges.
