China to unveil swine flu vaccine

BEIJING, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- China is set to become the first country to begin mass inoculations against swine flu with a vaccine it has developed, the World Health Organization says.

But, WHO adds there are the usual concerns over possible side effects with new medication.

Inoculations should be ready to begin in a few weeks, CNN reported, before celebrations begin on Oct. 1 to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic.

The single-shot vaccine, PANFLU.1, was developed by Sinovac Biotech and is said to be suitable for people aged 3 to 60.

"We have to be ready for the fact that there might be adverse effects," WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told CNN,

"No matter what vaccine you're looking at, sometimes there are extremely rare side effects," he said. "We don't even know what those are yet, but they will show up in one in every two or 10 million vaccinated."
