13 dead in gold mine fire

BEIJING, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A fire in a gold mine Wednesday killed 13 people in China's central Henan province, scene of another major mine incident in which 42 died, authorities said.

Those killed in the gold mine in Sanmenxia city included six miners and seven rescue workers, Xinhua news agency reported. The bodies of all 13 victims were recovered, the report said.

A government official was quoted as saying a sudden cave-in caused an electric cable to catch fire. No other details were available.

Hours earlier in the same province, a gas blast in a coal mine in Pingdingshan killed 42 people and left 37 others trapped.

Chinese rescuers were trying Thursday to reach the trapped miners but with fading hopes of finding them alive because of high levels of carbon monoxide in the pit, China Daily reported.

The coal pit was being overhauled and had not been allowed to resume production by the city government, the report said. Police had detained the mine owner and two managers. Authorities also froze the colliery's bank account, the report said.
