Taiwan's ex-first lady sentenced for lying

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Taiwan's former first lady was sentenced to a year in prison for lying to prosecutors in her husband's corruption case, court officials in Taipei said.

Wu Shu-chen was convicted of helping her son, daughter and son-in-law give false testimony in the trial of her husband, Chen Shui-bian, CNN reported Wednesday.

Her son, daughter and son-in-law were sentenced to six months in jail. The four sentenced Tuesday were among 13 people indicted in the case.

Chen is accused of embezzling $17.7 million, taking bribes, laundering money and illegally removing classified documents from the presidential office. His trial began in March.

The former president has denied any wrongdoing, saying the charges were politically motivated.
