Man kills hungry bear that charged him

SOLDOTNA, Alaska, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- An Alaska fishing guide says he killed a grizzly bear that charged him with almost no warning as he walked his dogs near his home.

Greg Brush, who lives in Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula, said he heard a twig snapping Aug. 2 and looked over his shoulder, the Anchorage Daily News reported. He saw the bear less than 20 yards away and heading in his direction with its ears back.

"Came with zero warning," Brush said. "No woof, no popping of the teeth, no standing up, nothing like what you think."

Brush habitually carries his .454 Ruger Casull revolver when he walks his dogs because of previous encounters with bears. He fired two or three shots, including one he called a "total luck shot" that killed the bear.

He said the bear's teeth were covered with grass and it had almost no fat on its 900-pound body, suggesting it had not been eating much recently.

"It was starving to death and saw an opportunity," Brush said.

He said the encounter left him with "by far the most emotion I have felt for a while."

State troopers determined the bear killing was justifiable.
