New TV ads tout healthcare reform

WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A group supporting healthcare reform says it began a $12 million TV ad campaign Thursday to push for more affordable and more stable care.

Americans for Stable Quality Care, bankrolled largely by the pharmaceutical industry, brings together the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the American Medical Association, the Federation of American Hospitals and the Service Employees International Union, the nation's largest union of healthcare employees.

The ad campaign begins as polls show declining support for healthcare reform, which opponents have loudly decried at town hall meetings and on talk radio, Politico reported. The campaign will likely spend more than any other to support healthcare reform, the report said.

The first ad of the campaign says "health insurance reform ... means you can't be denied coverage for a pre-existing condition or dropped if you get sick." It also asserts reform will put healthcare decisions "in the hands of you and your doctor" and will lower costs.

The ad, expected to air a few weeks, is aimed at gaining support among conservative congressional Democrats and swing voters, Politico said.
