Finland swamped by found munitions reports

HELSINKI, Finland, July 31 (UPI) -- The Finnish Defense Forces face increased calls about undetonated wartime munitions found throughout Finland during summer months, an official says.

Defense Command information officer Henrik Gahmberg said with people cleaning and renovating homes during the summer months, calls about the potentially dangerous munitions become a daily occurrence, the Helsingin Sanomat said Friday.

"Many of the finds are Finnish arms caches from the time of the Soviet Red Army's massive Vyborg–Petrozavodsk Offensive in the summer of 1944," Gahmberg said.

"Then there are those cases, and there quite a few of them, where a live grenade has been brought from the war as a souvenir to decorate the bookcase or mantelpiece."

The discovered munitions range from simple handgun ammunition to heavy artillery grenades, the Helsingin Sanomat said.

A resident in the province of Southern Savo even discovered 18 anti-tank mines Tuesday, leading authorities to detonate the weaponry as a precaution.
