China to take part in World Games

BEIJING, May 23 (UPI) -- Chinese officials say they will send athletes to participate in the 2009 World Games to be held in the southern coastal Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung.

Liu Peng, chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee, said athletes from nine COC associations will compete in the games. China is also sending an observation delegation to the event, Xinhua reported Saturday.

The decision was announced Friday when Liu met with Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu in Beijing, the state-run news service reported.

The 2009 World Games will be held from July 16 to 26.
