Mumbai attack suspect may be a juvenile

MUMBAI, April 24 (UPI) -- A suspect in the Mumbai terror attacks will undergo bone and dental tests to determine if he is a juvenile, a judge has ruled.

Judge M.L. Tahiliyani said that in addition to the tests to be performed on Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam can examine witnesses to help determine if the suspected terrorist is under the age of 18, the Indian Express said Friday.

Kasab is is accused of taking part in the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008 that killed at least 173 people.

Kasab's lawyer, Abbas Kazmi, said his client would face heavy scrutiny while undergoing the medical tests to determine his true age.

If the tests and witness examinations support Kasab's claim he was a juvenile when he took part in the deadly attacks in the Indian city, his case would be tried in juvenile court.

Kazmi told the Express that under the Juvenile Justice Act, the longest jail term a convicted juvenile can receive is three years.
