Hijacked Canadians home from Jamaica

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, April 21 (UPI) -- More than 40 Canadians arrived back in Halifax, Nova Scotia, early Tuesday, a day after a hijacker stormed their plane in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

A statement from CanJet Airlines in Halifax said the crew had also arrived home, but on a different flight, the Canwest News Service reported.

The airline said the crew was "positive but understandably very tired and emotional."

The company didn't indicate the status of the other 140 passengers.

Late Sunday, a 20-year-old Jamaican man police described as unstable forced his way onto the aircraft, demanding to be flown to Cuba. The crew convinced him to free the passengers in exchange for their money. He then held six of the eight crewmembers captive for seven hours before Jamaican special forces stormed the plane and arrested him.

No shots were fired in the police operation and no one was injured.

The flight was bound for Cuba, and then on to Halifax. Passengers were put up in hotels Sunday night while a second CanJet aircraft was sent to bring them home, the report said.
