Indonesia flood rescuers seek 73 missing

JAKARTA, March 29 (UPI) -- Indonesian authorities Sunday said they were seeking 73 people reported missing in the wake of a burst dam near Jakarta that has taken 91 lives so far.

The search for people swept away in a wall of water and mud that poured from a fissure in the Situ Gintung dam early Saturday was being carried out by more than 1,000 search-and-rescue team members who vowed to keep looking for victims every day for a week, the Jakarta Post reported.

The discovery of 33 bodies Saturday night raised the death toll to 91, officials said.

"Many victims are not registered by our neighborhood unit because they were university students who rented rooms in the neighborhood," said Cireundeu neighborhood official Bejo.

The Post said thick mud and building rubble was making it difficult to identify the victims.

More than 500 residents were left homeless and were staying at temporary shelters.
