Convicted killer facing execution in Wash.

SEATTLE, March 12 (UPI) -- Cal Coburn Brown, who was convicted of killing a 22-year-old woman in 1991, is set to be executed in King County, Wash., an official said Thursday.

King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg said Brown, whose appeal of the state's right to administer lethal injection was rejected Wednesday, will be executed Friday morning for the killing of Holly Washa, The Seattle Times said.

"He got a very fair assessment," Satterberg said of Brown, 50. "Every issue has been raised, and now it's time to carry out the sentence."

Brown's attorneys had asked Thurston County Superior Court Judge Chris Wickham to stay the execution because they questioned whether an initial drug used in lethal injections actually prevents pain.

Defense attorney Jeff Ellis told the Times he would be appealing Wickham's ruling to the state Supreme Court. Ellis also said he has petitioned Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire for a last-minute reprieve of Brown's sentence.

Prosecutors in Brown's trial accused him of kidnapping Washa in May 1991 and raping and torturing her before stabbing her repeatedly and leaving her to die in the trunk of her car.
