Anti-gun groups sue to stop new rules

WASHINGTON, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- An anti-gun group is suing to stop enactment of Bush administration rules that would let people carry concealed weapons in many U.S. parks.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence calls the rules the "Bush administration's parting gift for the gun lobby," The Washington Times reported Wednesday.

"National parks are already incredibly safe. Why are you going to add a risk where none before existed?" asked Doug Pennington, a Brady Campaign spokesman.

The rules, to take effect Jan. 9, reverse a 25-year-old policy by the U.S. Department of the Interior that required guns to be kept unloaded in national parks and packed away, except for areas designated for target and hunting practice, the Times reported.

In documents filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Washington, the Brady Center sought an injunction to stop the rules from taking effect and asked for a lengthier review of their legality.

Interior Department officials declined to comment on the Brady Campaign's action, the Times reported.
