Carbon monoxide leak hospitalizes 66

HOHHOT, China, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Sixty-five students and one teacher at a school in the Chinese city of Hohhot have been hospitalized with carbon monoxide poisoning, an official says.

An unidentified spokesman for the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's disease control center said only 19 of the victims are facing longer hospital stays in relation to the apparent carbon monoxide leak at the Niuchang Primary School, China's official state-run Xinhua news agency said Thursday.

Initial results of a center investigation into the incident found fumes from the school's boiler room had leaked into the school's dorms.

The teacher and students reported feelings of dizziness Wednesday morning after waking in the school's residential areas.

Xinhua said the incident comes in the wake of a similar carbon monoxide poisoning case in northern China. Earlier this month, 11 students at a Shaanxi province middle school died apparently from fumes emitted by a charcoal stove used to warm the school.
