Montreal parking garage collapse kills 1

MONTREAL, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- One man was killed when a large portion of the roof of a Montreal underground parking garage collapsed, firefighters said.

Several hundred people who live in the apartment building were evacuated Wednesday morning when a slab of concrete about one-third the size of a football field came down, The (Montreal) Gazette reported.

The 14-story building also housed the offices of a dental supply courier company, whose fleet of vehicles was crushed in the collapse, the Globe and Mail reported. The unidentified 34-year-old man who was killed was one of the company's 22 drivers, the report said.

Firefighters used heat-seeking devices and sniffer dogs to search for other victims, but none were found as of late Wednesday, The Gazette said.

Officials said residents could expect to be out of their apartments for at least two days while Quebec provincial engineering inspectors examined the site and determined the structure's stability.

The building is owned by Cap Reit, a Toronto real estate investment trust and has been the subject of numerous complaints in the past about flaking concrete and rusty water trickling in the garage, the Globe said.
