SoCal foster teen's organs harvested

CHULA VISTA, Calif., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- The foster parents of a San Diego-area teen say the boy's organs were harvested for transplant over the objections of his biological family.

Jason Spickerman, 16, was declared brain dead after a weekend traffic collision that killed his 18-year-old brother as well.

Jason's foster parents had agreed to allow doctors to remove various organs for donation, however, his blood relatives stepped in and tried to halt the procedure.

The San Diego Union-Tribune said Tuesday that the foster family announced that Jason's organs were removed and donated to six different people, including an infant.

The Chula Vista teen's aunt told the newspaper Monday that the family had objected because they thought there might be a chance Jason would recover.
