Islamabad airport under alert

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- The alert level at Pakistan's Islamabad international airport was increased Thursday following threats of a attack at the facility, authorities said.

CNN, quoting Islamabad police official Muhammad Asghar, reported the Benazir Bhutto International Airport was evacuated and put on high alert in response to intelligence reports indicating a threat.

Security personnel searched the airport compound for signs of an attack such as explosives, it said.

The threat comes in the wake of Saturday's bomb attack on the capital's Marriott Hotel, in which at least 53 people died. Reports have said more explosives have been moved into the city since the hotel blast.

The BBC reported authorities were taking the threat seriously even though flights were operating normally. It also said the United States has advised its government personnel against staying or visiting hotels in Islamabad, Karachi and Peshawar.
