Judge backs controversial Bible club

ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A Bible club at a high school in Anaheim, Calif., should be allowed to meet on school grounds once it is organized, a federal judge has ruled.

Attorney Karen Milam, who is representing an unidentified student in the matter, said the judge's decision in her client's lawsuit against Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District means the proposed Bible club should be given all normal privileges, the Riverside (Calif.) Press-Enterprise said.

"The judge ordered the Bible club be allowed to exist and be given the rights and privileges of other clubs on campus," Milam said.

The controversy began when five students at Esperanza High School asked to start the religious club in May, only to have their request be denied by school administrators.

Officials said the club was not related to the school's curriculum and therefore should not be allowed on school grounds, the Press-Enterprise reported.

U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney ruled that since the high school had previously allowed two other clubs to be formed that did not fit into its curriculum, the new Bible club should be allowed the same rights.
