Ex-Ohio Congressman Seiberling dead at 89

AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Rep. John Seiberling, D-Ohio, died of respiratory failure Saturday at his Akron-area home, his wife Betty said. He was 89.

Seiberling, who served eight terms in the House, was best remembered for his efforts to protect public lands and bringing Ohio its only national park, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

Before being elected to Congress in 1970, Seiberling was a corporate attorney for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 17 years. Seiberling, running on an anti-Vietnam War platform, ousted Republican Rep. William Ayres.

He also was a member of the House Judiciary Committee that held impeachment hearings against President Richard Nixon, who eventually resigned from office.

After leaving Congress, Seiberling taught at the University of Akron School of Law and directed the university's Center for Peace Studies.
