Report cites rising Ukrainian racial woes

KIEV, Ukraine, July 10 (UPI) -- Amnesty International warned in a report Thursday of an alarming rise in violent racial discrimination incidents in Ukraine.

The organization pointed to attacks against foreigners and members of ethnic and religious minorities and the alleged lack of adequate response from the authorities.

Four foreigners have been killed this year in Kiev because of their skin color, the report said.

"Anybody who looks different is at risk of attacks by members of the public or frequent document checks and racial profiling by the police,"said Nicola Duckworth, Europe and Central Asia program director at Amnesty International. "The Ukrainian authorities cannot afford to ignore xenophobia and social prejudice."
