Leaning Tower of Pisa not moving

PISA, Italy, May 28 (UPI) -- Engineers say the Leaning Tower of Pisa is no longer in danger of falling over thanks to completion of a $40 million restoration project.

The engineer who led the project, Michele Jamiolkowski, says the structure won't move again for at least another 300 years, The Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.

"All of our best hopes have been confirmed," says Jamiolkowski.

Built in 1173, the 183-foot tower was leaning nearly 15 feet when the restoration work began in 1999.

Following completion of the project, the tower is now off center by 13 feet.

The last attempt to straighten the tower was carried out under Benito Mussolini who wanted the structure to be perfectly vertical. Workers poured concrete into the foundation causing the tower to sink further.

Finishing ceremonies for the current work is scheduled for late summer
