Babies left at mortuary for two years

STOKE-ON-TRENT, England, March 31 (UPI) -- The bodies of seven miscarried and aborted babies were found to have been overlooked at a hospital mortuary in England for more than two years, officials said.

The babies, which were supposed to have been cremated or buried, were stored at the University of North Staffordshire Hospital.

Samples had been taken from the bodies, so their disposal was postponed at the time. But when the test results did not show up the fetuses wound up in storage because of an "administrative error," the newspaper said.

"It is a distressing time for families and they assume doctors have complied with their wishes," said Michael Summers, vice chairman of the Patients Association.

The babies have since been cremated or buried, and an investigation has been started into the foul-up, the newspaper reported.
