A Department of Homeland Security official said the Washington area was not under imminent threat but people were asked to leave voluntarily several buildings as a precaution. A formal evacuation was not issued, CNN said.
The small, private plane was traveling east and diverted, landing at an airport in Leesburg, Va., about 40 miles away from Washington. WJLA-TV, Leesburg, reported.
