JERUSALEM, March 12 (UPI) -- Two prominent rabbis have reportedly given the OK to a group that seeks to avenge the deaths of eight students at a Jerusalem seminary last week.
Israel's Channel 1 says that Saturday -- two days after the attack at Mercaz Harav -- several men seeking revenge met with a school rabbi and another rabbi known in far right circles, Ynetnews reported Wednesday.
The religious leaders are said to have granted approval for three of the men to carry out an act of retribution after concluding that Israeli military forces would be unlikely to do so.
The three men sanctioned by the rabbis are all believed to be yeshiva graduates who have served in the military and are licensed to carry guns.
Mercaz Harav has denied that any student or rabbi associated with the school plans to carry out an attack on an Arab figure, adding that it is considering a libel suit against Channel 1.
Last Thursday a man identifed as a 26-year-old Arab driver of the yeshiva, entered the library of Mercaz Harav and opened fire, killing eight people. The gunman was killed by a student.
