Explosions disrupt Nepali Congress meeting

DHARAN, Nepal, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A meeting of Nepali Congress party officials in Inaruwa Saturday was disrupted by a series of nearby explosions, police said.

Police Inspector Bipin Gautam told the newspaper Kantipur the three blasts took place just as the Congress' general-secretary, Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, was addressing the assembled party members.

The explosions allegedly came from bombs detonated by nearby demonstrators, but police said no deaths had been reported.

United Madhesi Front demonstrators have been attempting to disrupt the Nepali Congress talks since they began, forcing police to increase their security efforts.

Kantipur reported that when Nepali Congress officials began arriving at the party's office in Inaruwa, demonstrators attacked their vehicles before being repelled by police.

In addition to United Madhesi Front followers, the demonstrators reportedly included members of the Madhesi People's Rights Forum and the Sadbhavana Party.
